Pacific Northwest Wine of the Week for April 11, 2012

This week: Kiona Lemberger. Fortified wines in Fresh Press. Barrel tasting weekends coming up. Gorge Passport Weekend. Jones of Washington.

April 3, 2012
Vol. 13, No. 16

Kiona Vineyards Winery 2009 Lemberger

Appellation: Red Mountain

For the third time in the past six vintages, Scott Williams' Lemberger has earned best of category at a major California wine competition, this time at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in January. The beautiful nose brings expressive aromas of sweet oak with cinnamon, rose hips and dark strawberry. On the palate, it's assertive with its cherries and strawberries, finishing with great acidity and bold tannins. Its gold medal also qualifies it for Wine Press Northwest's 2012 Platinum Competition. Last year, the 2008 edition of this wine earned a Double Platinum and voted the best red wine of the judging -- regardless of the price. At this price and quality, buy a case or two and make it your house wine. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine. (3,000 cases, 13.8% alc.)

Price: $12

Food matches: Enjoy this wine all summer long with grilled meats

Planning for barrel tasting weekends

Spring wine events are coming up fast, so now is the time to make your plans.

Spring Barrel Tasting in the Yakima Valley is April 27-29, with at least 40 wineries participating.

Spring Release Weekend in Walla Walla, also known as Leonetti Weekend, is May 4-6. More than 50 wineries are expected to participate.

Memorial Weekend in Wine Country is a bit farther out, but start planning now to head to Oregon's Willamette Valley, where 150 wineries will welcome visitors May 26-28.

Upcoming wine events

Each week, we highlight an upcoming wine event in the Pacific Northwest.

The Columbia Gorge Passport Weekend is Friday through Sunday. Cost is $15.

To see more events (or submit yours at no cost), go to our calendar. We currently have 111 upcoming events on our calendar.

Jones of Washington

Victor Palencia is the winemaker for Jones of Washington, our 2012 Washington Winery of the Year. The young winemaker grew up in the vineyards, where his parents worked as migrant laborers. In this week's video, Victor talks about Jones of Washington and answers the burning question: If Scooby Doo was a wine, what would he be?
