Columbia Crest 2010 Two Vines Gewurztraminer

Appellation: Washington

When done well, few grape varieties show as beautifully as Gewurztraminer, and here's a prime example. It shows classic aromas of yellow grapefruit, lychee, dusty apple and Meyer lemon. The flavorful blend of Texas pink grapefruit, green apple and more lemon gets a boost with a bit of spritzy acidity before a finish of Limeade. It's a touch off-dry, making it very appealing for enjoying on a warm day or in a hot tub. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine. (23,000 cases, 11.5% alc.)

Price: $8

Food matches: Enjoy with mild cheeses, chicken, turkey or duck.

Columbia Crest, Hwy 221, Columbia Crest Drive, Paterson, WA 99345, 509-875-4227, www.columbiacrest.com

More about Columbia Crest

The Northwest's largest winery produces more than 2 million cases of wine annually, staying ahead of older sibling Chateau Ste. Michelle.

Last year, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates named Juan Munoz Oca as its head winemaker. The Argentinian native succeeded Ray Einberger, who had led Crest to new heights - including the world's top wine in 2009, according to Wine Spectator. Einberger was promoted to the newly created position of in-house consultant for the company's luxury brands.

Savor Northwest Wine Competition

Zerba Cellars, our 2011 Pacific Northwest Winery of the Year, won three gold medals at the Savor Northwest Wine Competition, held in late February in Cannon Beach, Ore. The Walla Walla Valley winery won for its 2008 Malbec, 2008 Sangiovese and 2007 Syrah.

The professional judging panel awarded more than 30 gold medals in the inaugural competition.

New winemaker at Walla Walla winery

Bergevin Lane Vineyards in Walla Walla, Wash., announced that longtime Washington winemaker Dave Harvey will be replacing Steffan Jorgensen. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Bergevin Lane, founded by Gary Bergevin, daughter Annette Bergevin and partner Amber Lane.

Jorgensen left earlier this year for Chile, where is making wine with his family. He started at Bergevin Lane since 2006.

Tilth Restaurant

Maria Hines moved to Seattle from San Diego to pursue her dream of opening a restaurant dedicated to using organic ingredients. By 2005, she opened Tilth, and the Wallingford neighborhood restaurant soon received certification from the acclaimed Oregon Tilth organization. In 2009, Hines was named Best Northwest Chef by the James Beard Foundation. And in 2011, she opened her second restaurant, the Golden Beetle, in nearby Ballard. Hines served as Wine Press Northwest's Match Maker chef for the Spring 2012 issue, pairing cuisine with Kyra Wines 2010 Chenin Blanc in the Columbia Valley and Corvus Cellars 2008 Syrah * Petite Sirah from Red Mountain.
